Peak Pizza? Domino's Pizza Chief Executive Departs After Pivot Towards Fried Chicken.
The boss of Domino's Pizza Group who indicated the UK might have hit peak pizza while expanding the chain into fried chicken has been replaced after conflicts with its board.
Executive Transition
Andrew Rennie is departing after only 24 months in charge, and will be succeeded on an interim basis by the organization's operations head, Frampton, while the pizza giant searches for a permanent CEO.
The outgoing executive, who was with Domino's for over 20 years, had attempted to pivot the UK's biggest pizza food delivery firm towards fried chicken, remarking recently there was not “huge potential” left in the pizza sector in the UK. He said chicken was the most rapidly expanding protein in the globe.
Board Tensions
Reports indicate that there was tension between the CEO and the directors over his strategy and business vision, although Domino's release said he was leaving “through mutual consent”.
Recent Product Introduction
In September, the chain introduced its poultry offering – which the former chief described as a “bold new chapter” for the company – and is testing it in over 200 locations in the north-west of England and the province.
While the company is still intending to launch it across its almost 1,400 stores in 2026 as planned, it regards fried chicken as a supplement for its primary pizza operations.
Leadership Comment
Bull, the Domino's chair, commented: “The board believes that there are a range of possibilities to enhance value and performance improvement in our primary operations. We are focused on finding the suitable leader to oversee the careful implementation of that development approach.”
Industry Difficulties
Earlier this month, Domino's, which has a substantial customer base in the British Isles, said sales fell by 1.5 percent in the third quarter. In the summer, it cautioned that the takeaway market had “intensified” as it blamed reduced spending in the lead-up to the budget and higher payroll outlays for weaker-than-expected sales and a 15 percent decline in interim earnings.
Other pizza operators are also facing challenges. Another major chain revealed the closure of 68 restaurants a last month, after the company behind its British operations entered insolvency.
Health Initiatives
Responding to consumer trends towards healthier eating, Domino's has launched reduced-calorie products, such as its light base line of pizzas below 400 calories as well as vegan and wheat-free pizzas. A family-sized pepperoni has over 2,300 kcal. A large cheese and tomato pizza has 2,171 kcal, while a individual has 909 kcal.
Acting Management
The interim chief has been with Domino's since 2021, and previously worked for the betting firm William Hill. It is understood that she is not seeking to assume the CEO position permanently.
She said: “The company has a number of ongoing expansion and performance initiatives that we will be dedicated to carrying out at pace.”
Frampton noted these comprised additional efforts on the organization's procurement system and menu innovation, and its loyalty scheme.
The pizza chain is also without a permanent finance director until the spring, when a new appointee comes aboard from the Irish cider and beer maker a well-known firm. In the meantime, Snow acts as acting financial officer.
