A trio of officers were killed and at least 15 others were hurt in a seemingly premeditated blast caused by gas at a country home in northern Italy.

How It Happened

The explosion was triggered as police and firefighters went into the residence near the Verona region to execute an removal notice for three siblings aged in their 50s and 60s.

All three officers killed belonged to the Carabinieri force.

Investigation Developments

One male and one female were taken into custody at the site and another man who fled following the blast was found soon after. Each of them have been taken to hospital.

The detonation could be audible as far as 3 miles distant and photographs from the location displayed the structure turned into a mass of wreckage.

“This is a time for grieving,” stated the Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, who added that previous tries had been made to evict the brother and sister trio in the past.

Property Situation

The president of the region of Veneto, Luca Zaia, said the property was facing an removal notice due to unpaid amounts accumulated by the property owners.

Mediators had been assigned to talk with the siblings who had secured themselves into the property. When the police reached the location shortly after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), authorities believe one of the siblings caused the detonation.

“As we went inside, we encountered a completely deranged action,” regional commander Claudio Papagno stated to the media.

A gas canister had been set off, and the detonation directly hit our personnel,” he explained.

Petrol bombs were also discovered at the residence, the interior minister stated.

Injuries and Destruction

Those injured by the explosion consisted of eleven more officers of the military police as well as three members of Italy's state police and a firefighter.

As stated by the prosecuting attorney, the property was in a poor condition and had was without power.

He thought the explosion had occurred on a floor above the doorway and told journalists it was a “premeditated and voluntary homicide”. Shortly before the incident, he revealed members had “heard a whistle, likely the gas cylinders being activated”.

Neighbor Statements

“Everyone was aware the circumstances were severe,” local residents stated to reporters, noting that the trio had in the past stated to “cause an explosion” rather than leave the house.

“The explosion had left a ‘terrible, very painful and dramatic toll’.”

The Defense Minister Guido Crosetto stood alongside other government officials in honoring the three men who had been killed in the service of their country.
